  1. 1775-1847. Irish politician, called `the
  2. Liberator'. In 1823 he founded the Catholic
  3. Association to press Roman Catholic claims.
  4. Although ineligible, as a Roman Catholic, to
  5. take his seat, he was elected member of
  6. Parliament for County Clare 1828 and so
  7. forced the government to grant Catholic
  8. emancipation. In Parliament he cooperated
  9. with the Whigs in the hope of obtaining
  10. concessions until 1841, when he launched his
  11. campaign for repeal of the union. His
  12. reserved and vacillating leadership and
  13. conservative outlook on social questions
  14. alienated his most active supporters, who
  15. broke away and formed the nationalist Young
  16. Ireland movement.
